Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire

Release Dates
JP: November 21st, 2002
US: March 17th, 2003
AUS: April 3rd, 2003
EU: July 25th, 2003

Basic Information
The first Pokemon games for the GBA, Ruby and Sapphire are set in Hoenn, a new region separate from the Kanto/Johto landmass. The game features 135 new Pokemon for a grand total of 386.

The storyline is focused on Team Magma and Aqua (depending on which version) and their plight to awaken the legendary Groudon and Kyogre.

Many changes to the game mechanics since G/S/C were made, making Ruby and Sapphire incompatible with the previous games. The main change was the introduction of EVs (Effort Values) which replaced Stat Experience in the older games, making new generation Pokemon weaker overall than their R/B/Y/G/S/C counterparts.

Other new features include:
Abilities
Natures
Double battles
Renamed berries
New Pokeballs
Secret Bases
PokeBlocks
Pokemon Contests

Contests are perhaps the biggest new feature in Hoenn, where Pokemon must match up different attacks with the five contest types - Cute, Beauty, Tough, Smart and Cool. These "stats" can also be raised through the use of PokeBlocks which are made using Berry Blenders.

Together, Ruby and Sapphire are the best selling GBA games of all time.
