Pokemon Gold and Silver were made for the Gameboy Color. They are set in the region of Johto, a land to the west of Kanto and included a set of 100 new Pokemon.
Some of the new features introduced include:
Day and night
New types: Steel and Dark
Brand new Pokeballs
Mystery Gift allowing players to receive special items
New evolution methods (trading with item attached, happiness, day/night)
All of these have made returns in consequent titles, making Gold and Silver probably the most innovative Pokemon games to date.
Players are also able to travel to Kanto once they have completed the Johto League.

Crystal is the third Johto instalment, with the main change being the introduction of a female main character, and the storyline focused around Suicune.
Other new features include:
Battle Tower near Olivine City
More puzzles at the Ruins of Alph
Pokemon "swarms" introduced
"Odd Egg" received from Day Care Couple. It has a 50% chance of being Shiny.
Dragon's Den events altered
Rainbow Wing can only be obtained once the three legendary dogs have been caught
Move Tutor introduced
In the Japanese version only, players could link up with a mobile phone device that would allow them to get a GS Ball and eventually capture Celebi
